The Silent Shift

According to Thom Rainer, the silent shift away from church rarely begins with a decision. It begins with a pattern. One missed Sunday becomes two. Twice a month becomes once. Then occasional becomes normal. But over time, the cumulative effect means a once-faithful church member becomes a sporadic attendee.

Somewhere along the way, without officially leaving the church, church participation becomes one of multiple options instead of a priority and a commitment. Weekends fill up with other activities. Travel increases. Kid's activities expand. Rest becomes more important. And church loses the competition for our time, attention, and energy. Satan celebrates.

I am thankful for everyone who attends on Sundays, connects with a small group, serves other people, gives money, and declares the gospel. We are a family. But if you find yourself in the "silent shift," I want you to make church participation a high priority instead of an option. After all, when we join the family of God, we are preparing to spend eternity with Jesus and the church.

See you on Sunday for our discipleship hour at 9:00am, coffee fellowship at 10:00am, and worship at 10:30am.

In Christ,

Pastor Nathan
